About Fred Caro

(Deceased)

Fred Caro was a 1954 graduate of Springdale High School and a later graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education. Fred was a collegiate athlete in the sports of track, football and wrestling. He was Captain of the 1957 undefeated and untied football team / PA conference champion at Lock Haven State Teachers College and received All-State and Little All-American honors in football. In 1963, after teaching and coaching at the high school level, Fred accepted a position at Edinboro State College to become a professor, head wrestling coach and, assistant football, and track coach. Most notably Fred Caro served as Edinboro’s head wrestling coach for 21 years (1963-1984) where he became known as “coach” to many athletes and students who would become meaningful life-long friends. During that time he had a 135-98-4 record in dual meets, and was Edinboro’s career leader in wins until 2009. That included five seasons with 10-or-more wins, including then school- record 11 wins in 1972-73 and 1977-78.  His 1976-77 squad was 11th at the NAIA National Championships, with the ‘77-78 squad placing 12th and the ’78-79 team coming in 11th. Along the way he coached seven PSAC champions and 13 NAIA All-American, including Tom Herr, a national champion in 1973, Edinboro’s first national champion. He coached in 17 national championships and was named the NAIA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1985. In addition, he was inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. Fred served as the President of the NAIA national Wrestling Coached Association in 1978 and ’79 and in 1977 was selected to serve as coach of the USA-NAIA Freestyle Wrestling Team that toured Japan and Korea. Besides coaching, Fred enjoyed supporting local sporting events over the years, including serving as little league baseball umpire and officiating junior wrestling and high school wrestling throughout Erie County. Additionally, Coach Caro conducted youth wrestling camps on the campus of Edinboro State College dating back to the early 70’s to showcase and generate interest in the sport of wrestling.
