About Max C. Strub
Maxie Strub a 5’10”, 130-135 pound lightweight was one of the finest boxers to ever come out of the Erie area. He appeared in over 350 amateur and professional fights and was never knocked out. Managed by Duke Denning he began his professional career in 1923, at the age of 17 and retired in 1937. During a ten year period he was ranked in the top ten in his weight division and at one time ranked as high as third by Eddie Borden of Ring Magazine. Following his retirement, he trained one of Erie’s outstanding boxers, a Hall of Famer himself – Johnny Seaman. Maxie twice defeated Frankie Bojarski in charity bouts and would have had a shot at the 135 pound title if Tony Canzoneri had not turned down a lucrative offer to defend his crown, against Maxie, I in Erie, PA.
